St. Mary's Lighthouse
St. Mary’s Island, at Whitley Bay, is reached between the tides via a short causeway.
Completed in 1898 on a hazardous coast for shipping, the Lighthouse remained operational until 1984 when modern navigational techniques took over.
Since then the Lighthouse and former keepers' cottages have been operated as a visitor centre, and are surrounded by a Nature Reserve with an area of rockpools, clifftop grassland, a beach and wetland habitats.
